My fiance and I are looking into having our wedding and reception at somebody's house and hiring a justice of the peace to officiate our marriage, and we want to save money by having the wedding reception potluck and BYOB (Bring Your Own Booze).

Simple answer...Yes....Tacky. The only time I can think it may be okay is just to have a pot luck party without telling anyone you are getting married. It can be 'suprise entertainment'.

Agree that some people will find it tacky. There are several ways to solve this. 1. Invite only friends and family who will understand your financial situation 2. Prepare or serve atleast a big entree and mention that you will provide some alcohol 3. Why not do a brunch or picnic instead? It will be cheaper than a dinner.

Yes really tacky. I agree also that you invite only your family, and closest friends those understands what you've been through financially. But have prepare at least 2 main course dishes and the drinks.
