Both me and FI come from large, tight-knit families, but he doesn't like most of his mother's side. He doesn't really want to invite like half of his mother's family, but his mother really wants them there.

That is a tough situation. Talk to your FI about how opposed he is to inviting them. If they are from out of town, there's a chance they won't be able to make it anyways, and most likely your FI will not have to spend much time with any of them because there will be so many people there. I'd try to convince him that it would not be horrible to invite them.

I agree with cindy. Try to talk to your FI. Ultimately the day is for the two of you, and if he really doesn't want them there, don't invite them. However, if you can avoid the drama by just inviting them and not having to spend much time with them during the reception, that'd be the best way.
