We get to use the church fellowship hall for free, but it's well... ugly. It's got 15 ft high ceilings with florescent lighting and linoleum off-white floors. Do I have an chance of making it appealing?

Drapes, low lighting (twinkle lights and candles), and quality decorations. You can order fabric, especially tulle, pretty cheap online. Use it to add drapes around the walls and for the ceiling. Then, off-set the space by choosing nice linens and centerpieces. Quality items will make the space feel more luxurious.

Low lighting will help dramatically! Also, I'd suggest renting a dance floor to make sure it still has the feeling of a wedding reception and not church get-together.

Recently attended a wedding and there were so many fun things to look at that I never noticed the walls and floors. The Bride and Groom had enlarged wedding photos of their parents and grandparents and displayed them on easels. They had borrowed large glass bowls and filled them with water and small battery operated tropical fish which swam around all evening. The tables has helium tropical fish balloons and colorful tablecloths. During the ceremony, the wedding party, parents and Bride and Groom participated in a Unity Sand Ceremony. The whole wedding was so festive and busy that it could have been held in a warehouse and we would not have noticed!
