Is this a good idea? Is a dj worth the extra money?

I agree that if you can you should hire a dj. If budget is an issue, here are some tips to help:

a. Ask someone to manage the iPod or iPhone or laptop- perhaps you have a friend who prides himself/herself about music

b. Check out Pandora stations, Spotify, Songza for playlists

c. Ask someone to head the party fun. Get your most outgoing or funniest friend.

If you can then, take a chance with an up and comer dj. The rate might be reasonable. If you can splurge, splurge on a dj and a band! wink

Yes, definitely it is worth the money. Not only playing your favorite songs, they will also take care the flow of your crowd which would less you from worrying, instead, enjoy your special day.

Just as everyone else has mentioned, the DJ is there to coordinate your entire reception, keep your party flowing, and keep the dance floor packed.  If you go the do-it-yourself route, shop around for great equipment.  I own Professional DJ Services and offer an extremely budget-friendly DIY package (professional speakers, stands, and microphone rental package).  So just because you choose to use your own music/playlists, you can still have great-sounding equipment at a fraction of the cost of hiring me to physically be performing at your event.  Best of luck with your planning!
